Aloha Menu: Enterprise Self-Service at Scale

Replacing a legacy 2009 bottleneck with an autonomous cloud rule engine for 94 global restaurant brands—collapsing menu rollout cycles from days to minutes.

Multi-channel menu synchronization with restaurant items flowing into digital ordering menus

Multi-channel menu item distribution: physical kitchen items pushing seamlessly into digital ordering menus.

01 / Context

Menu management for 94 enterprise brands was bottlenecked by a 2009 desktop system that blocked operators from inputting their own sales items.

Aloha Menu powers point-of-sale registers for tens of thousands of locations worldwide (including Five Guys and Chili's), managing over 100,000 active item configurations across in-store registers, drive-thrus, and third-party delivery channels. In the legacy 2009 system, every new menu item, combo, or regional price update required submitting support tickets for vendor engineers to manually configure in database files.

02 / The Shift

× Before (Legacy 2009)
  • • 3–5 day manual turnaround: Operators could not input items directly; every change required submitting vendor tickets.
  • • Register crash risk: Circular modifier logic and tax errors frequently broke in-store POS hardware during peak lunch rushes.
  • • Raw boolean syntax: Configuring combos required writing SQL-like expressions, unapproachable for restaurant general managers.
✓ After (Self-Service Cloud)
  • • Under 2 minutes: Fully validated self-service authoring with instant cloud distribution across all channels.
  • • Pre-flight validation: Automated conflict detection verifies modifier trees and pricing rules before sync.
  • • Visual slot builder: Interactive Quick Combos canvas translates complex business rules into intuitive drag-and-drop slots.

03 / The Approach

Four deliberate systems architecture decisions engineered for multi-unit operational reality.

1. De-risking 10 years of database debt through upfront discovery

Led cross-functional alignment sessions to catalog legacy database constraints, edge cases, and circular modifier loops. Mapped the entire enterprise pricing matrix upfront—identifying promotional combos as the critical path where vendor tools consistently failed customers.

Strategic discovery mapping enterprise risks

2. Modular configuration around restaurant mental models

Decomposed a sprawling 80-field database screen into an intuitive, sequential creation flow. Grouped modifiers, tax classes, and channel overrides into modular cards that match how restaurateurs actually conceive recipes and line items.

3. Deterministic rule-priority engine for channels and pricing

Architected a rule-priority engine allowing operators to schedule time-based pricing, happy hours, and third-party delivery markups (DoorDash, UberEats) without duplicating SKUs or overwriting parent-brand base pricing.

4. Visual slot-builder for Quick Combos

Replaced raw boolean SQL expressions with an interactive visual canvas and pre-flight simulation engine. This single capability became the flagship demonstration that secured immediate enterprise contract renewals.

04 / Impact

94 enterprise brands secured at General Availability with zero data migration regressions.

Aloha Menu launched to GA with 94 enterprise restaurant chains onboarded on day one. By replacing manual vendor tickets with validated self-service architecture, we collapsed operational cycle times from days to minutes while permanently eliminating vendor overhead.

Architectural Retrospective

Enterprise operators don't need complexity hidden — they need it structured.

Aloha Menu succeeded because we respected true multi-unit operational reality. Instead of flattening restaurant menu management into an oversimplified consumer form, we gave that complexity an intuitive, visual mental model operators could trust under peak lunch rush pressure.
